Ushers

Our History

In 1928 Sister Callie Fears and her band of Ushers foundered the Byrd Street Baptist Church Senior Usher Board. There was one official Usher Board until the tenure of Rev. Bennett W. Smith.

At that time the Usherettes was formed under the leadership of Sister Florence Fletcher. The Usherettes stayed in existence until the leadership of Rev. Lloyd C. Williams.
During his leadership, the Usherettes changed their name to Usher Board # 2. Eventually the Usher Boards combined and became the Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church Senior Usher Board.

Mission

Those who accept God's forgiveness and ask Jesus Christ to be their Savior and Lord can have only one appropriate response - To serve Him. He is King of our lives.

"Ushering is the art of making the members and visitors feel comfortable and of lending spiritual dignity to church service." "By promptness, courtesy, tact and unobtrusiveness, the usher helps the pastor and promotes worship."
The Lord is my light. He is the joy of my salvation of whom then shall I be afraid. I am a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. Yea though I meet with unpleasant conditions, I must keep smiling, for I must enter into His presence with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise.
"I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness" (psalm 84: 1 0).

Ushers are ready to serve. "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ: (Colossians 3:24).
The one outstanding trait of an usher is to be courteous. That is the watchword at all services.
Of course, one is not expected to smile at all times, but never frown when others display their temper. The best way to handle one who does display his temper, is to be polite, smile, and if appropriate, say, "I'm sorry."

Some people leave home out of sorts and the first person they meet at the entrance of the church is the usher. But, if you keep in mind that 5th chapter of Mattbew and the 16th verse, which reads: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven," you will be able to meet any
situation that arises.
.
The usher stands for, and is part of the church. The usher is the first person the worshipper comes into contact with, and he must show individual interest to each one.

The usher's personality, words and acts will largely set the tempo of the church service and may determine whether or not people come back again. It is an honor to be a church usher.
For one to be a cou.rageous usher, one must have faith in God, for only faith in God and in His way of life, can give us the courage we need to face the test of life.
